What to know before the first order
Commercial imports into Colombia require a licensed customs broker: it isn't optional above a certain value, it's the law. You also need a RUT registered for import activity with the DIAN. We don't do that local paperwork, but we coordinate with whoever does and prepare the Chinese-side documentation so it doesn't get stuck.
The real cost of a container
The factory price is half the story. On top of the goods you add freight, insurance, duty, VAT, port charges and inland transport to your warehouse. Before you commit to a supplier we build the full calculation, so the decision is made on landed cost in Colombia, not on the FOB price.

Do I need a customs broker to import from China to Colombia?
For commercial imports, yes: Colombian regulations require a licensed customs broker above a certain value. It's a local process handled by a company registered in Colombia.

How long does a shipment from China to Colombia take?
Sea transit is usually four to six weeks to Colombian ports, plus production and customs clearance. Plan the whole project, not just the vessel.
What taxes apply on import?
Duty according to the product's tariff heading, plus VAT on the taxable base, which includes goods, freight and insurance. Your customs broker confirms the classification, and it changes the final number considerably.
Can I start with a small volume?
Yes, with consolidated cargo. It costs more per unit than a full container, but it lets you test the product and the supplier before committing capital.
